Kier Highways – Safetymax triggers warnings & speed restrictions when boom is not stowed

Kier Highways

Project background

Kier Highways are continually striving to improve the safety of their whole fleet. Kier is one of the UK’s largest highways service providers, working with a wide range of partners from key central organisations like National Highways and Transport for London, through to a wide range of local authorities, who are collectively responsible for the roads we travel on. Motormax has worked closely with Kier Highways since 2020 and this is just one of a series of ongoing projects.

Customer challenge

The company identified the need to improve the safety of their fleet of grab lorries and barrier rigs to ensure the boom is stowed correctly before the vehicle is moved from a static position. The project commenced in June 2021.  All vehicles that come into the fleet are fitted with the Motormax bespoke safety solution.

Motormax solution

Motormax designed and developed a bespoke solution for Kier Highways from PCB board level upwards. It alerts the driver when the boom is not stowed correctly and includes a number of warnings, alerts and restrictions;

  • If the handbrake is disengaged whilst the boom is not stowed;
  • a spoken voice sounds in the cab which repeats ‘warning! boom not stowed’
  • a visual warning is displayed on screen in the cab stating ‘warning! boom not stowed’
  • The radio is muted so warnings can be clearly heard by the driver
  • The solution connects to the vehicle onboard telematics product creating an event that can be seen by the fleet operator
  • When the boom is not stowed correctly on a grab lorry, the speed is restricted to 10mph (which still allows the vehicle to move slowly into position to unload goods)
  • When the boom is not stowed correctly on a barrier rig vehicle, it will not move
