Motormax and Samsara single platform technology reduces Sysco GB incidents by 40%

sysco

Project Brief

In an effort to reduce incidents, enhance operational visibility, and provide valuable support to both fleet managers and drivers, Sysco GB sought a solution to proactively identify issues, enhance training processes, and monitor the activities of each vehicle on the road. Sysco GB chose to partner with Motormax and Samsara to ensure the safety of its drivers and improve fleet safety.

Challenges

Sysco GB’s success is wholly dependent on the seamless flow of its operations. This became a challenge amidst the escalation in road congestion, expanding daily workloads, and a demanding operational environment. Previously, managers depended on spot-checks and CCTV surveillance to pinpoint risky driving behaviors, but this method resembled searching for a needle in a haystack. The unreliability of CCTV systems and the time-consuming process of sifting through hours of footage posed significant challenges for managers. Sysco GB needed an all-in-one fleet and driver safety solution.

Integrated AI technology and high definition camera footage

Sysco GB’s fleet was installed with Motormax and Samsara’s integrated, single platform technology. The system combines Motormax’s in-cab Safetymax system — which provides a 360 degree view of a vehicle — with Samsara’s Connected Operations™ Cloud. Grounded in advanced AI, the platform delivers real-time alerts to both drivers and managers, automatically recording high-definition live footage from both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. This is made possible through the utilisation of an HD Camera connector, seamlessly integrating data from Motormax’s cameras to offer a continuous 360-degree view of the vehicle. Sysco GB has successfully implemented the Motormax/Samsara solution across all its depots in the UK.

40% decrease in incidents

    • Sysco GB achieved a 40% decrease in on-road incidents within three months
    • Insured costs down 15% (YoY)
    • Average cost of insurance claims down 10% (YoY)
    • Number of intended prosecutions in a depot down from an average of five to six a month to zero
    • 40% reduction in driver mobile phone usage
    • 17% reduction in harsh driving events
    • Drivers consistently record individual performance scores exceeding 90%

Paul Duncalf, Safety, Training, and Fleet Compliance Director at Sysco GB explains the benefits, and how the integration is their ‘biggest win’.

“The integration of Motormax and Samsara’s technology really is our biggest win. It means we get AI technology, high-definition camera footage, and driver performance monitoring delivered via a single cloud-based platform.

We have moved away from having a hard drive in each vehicle to a completely innovative and efficient system. The combined technology now vets 90% of the footage via AI. If we do want to investigate an event, all of the information is accessible via a single platform. We can search for and retrieve footage in just a few clicks which literally takes minutes as opposed to hours.

As soon as an accident occurs, we can contact the relevant insurance company with tangible evidence within an hour. This quick reaction time means we get a resolution much faster, which has saved us a lot of money on repairs and vehicle hire.

Overcoming specific challenges

Paul continued, “Motormax took the time to really listen to our challenges and designed a solution which meant the technology was far easier for our drivers to understand. This solution included rear cameras and an in-cab monitor which generates bespoke alerts to avoid driver ambiguity.

We had a particular challenge around low-speed manoeuvres in tight spaces. The Motormax team took the time to work with us to understand our challenges, they visited our depots on several occasions and really listened. They then presented us with a number of solutions including cameras and monitors that alert our drivers to potential hazards. And most importantly these solutions are user-friendly for our drivers.

Installation and service

We gave Motormax a huge retrofit challenge. We needed their team to install a significant number of vehicles in a very short timescale. They absolutely stepped up to the mark.  That level of service at relatively short notice was outstanding. Our account manager Mark is excellent, anything we need he is always there to make things happen”.

Motormax is “ahead of the game”

Paul sums up, “Motormax is a constant source of innovative ideas. They give us the tools to decide exactly what we need to operate a safe and efficient fleet. There are hundreds of camera suppliers out there, but many don’t understand our specific challenges. That’s how Motormax is ahead of the game amongst their competitors”.

A future built on driver safety

Sysco GB has successfully implemented the Motormax/Samsara single platform solution across all its depots in the UK, and the journey doesn’t end there. With continuous support and innovations from Motormax and Samsara, Sysco GB can consistently revolutionise its operations, whether by fine-tuning its toolset to better suit team requirements or capitalising on the latest developments to achieve future business objectives.
