Fleet Safety Case Study: Tarmac Achieves 30% reduction in Collisions and repair costs

Tarmac fleet safety

This case study demonstrates how modern fleet safety solutions in the UK can deliver measurable reductions in collisions, costs, and driver risk.

Tarmac’s partnership with Motormax and Geotab has delivered measurable gains across fleet safety, fleet risk management, operational efficiency, and driver performance.

By implementing an integrated single platform multi-camera and video telematics system and multi-camera vehicle solution, the business has achieved rapid and sustained improvements in fleet collision reduction, driver behaviour and fuel efficiency.

Fleet collision reduction achieved in 12-months:

  • High and medium-risk drivers reduced from 40% to 6.5%.
  • Fuel economy across the van fleet improved by 25%.
  • 30% reduction in driver-fault collisions.
  • 50% reduction in drivers pulling out in front of another vehicle.
  • 30% year-on-year saving in collision repair costs.
  • In addition, speeding incidents per 1,000 miles have halved since implementation in May 2023.

These data-driven results are helping Tarmac build a safer, more sustainable, and efficient fleet, while delivering proven return on investment across safety, insurance, and operating costs.

The Challenge: Managing Fleet Risk Across 2,000+ Vehicles

Tarmac operates a mixed fleet of over 2,000 vehicles including trucks, vans, pickups, and plant equipment. To manage the large and diverse operation, Tarmac required greater visibility and control across its seven regions and business units. The integration of Motormax’s multi-cameras with Geotab’s fleet management platform, MyGeotab, creates a single pane of glass experience for transport teams, supporting continuous improvement across safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

The Solution: Integrated Video Telematics and Multi-Camera Systems

The Motormax multi-camera system integrates with the MyGeotab fleet management software via API, leveraging Geotab’s powerful rules engine and reporting tools. When a predefined event is triggered by the Geotab rules engine, transport managers can instantly access and download video footage via a single platform, providing crucial evidence to protect drivers, develop driver training, and produce incident reporting.

Transport teams have fully embraced the Motormax/Geotab solution which has fundamentally changed how managers engage with safety data, shifting from low confidence and limited insight to clear evidence and practical action.

Results: Measurable Improvements in operational efficiency

Tarmac Fleet Risk & Compliance Manager, Jonathan Meddings explains: “The integration allows managers to view telematics data and high-quality camera footage in a single platform, accelerating decision-making, and streamlining fleet operations. As a result, we have already seen significant cost savings”.

Reducing Collisions and Improving Fuel Efficiency

The integrated technology enables Tarmac to accurately quantify driver performance through objective risk ratings and event-based data. This insight has become central to improving safety, accountability, and cost control across the fleet.

These outcomes demonstrate how real-time telematics and video insight directly influence driver behaviour, collision avoidance, and fuel efficiency – delivering both safety and operational efficiency benefits.

Insurance Claims Resolution with Video Evidence

The benefits of the Motormax and Geotab solution extend beyond internal fleet operations. By utilising integrated video and telematics data, Tarmac has improved collaboration with AXA insurance providers, resulting in faster claims resolution, improved communication, and clearer liability decisions.

Tarmac Head of Category Management & SRM, Lee Green explains: “We trained our insurance claims team on how to use the system so they can utilise footage to assist faster claims resolution. We are speaking to our insurers about what types of accidents we are having – for example, if the data shows a trend in rear-end shunts, we will consider adding rear cameras. The technology gives us better visibility of the fleet and the requirements for continuous improvement.”

Jonathan Meddings adds: “Our insurance company has provided Tarmac with a bursary, which we are now investing in multi-camera technology. We install cameras on every new vehicle because the return is proven – they reduce claims, avoid unnecessary costs, save management time and resource, and protect drivers who are not at fault.”

James Haycock, Director, Motormax comments, “This is a great example of what can be achieved when teams work closely together with a shared focus on safety. By combining the commitment and expertise of Motormax, Geotab and Tarmac, we’ve made significant progress in just 12-months. Our goal is always to help fleets reduce risk, prevent incidents and better protect drivers and vulnerable road users, and these results show exactly that. We’re incredibly proud of what’s been achieved so far.”

Building a Data-Driven Fleet Safety Culture

The technology has transformed driver engagement and recognition. From Geotab’s bespoke reports, Tarmac now rewards drivers by raising positive events. Tarmac launched the ‘100 Club’, which celebrates drivers who have driven over three hundred miles in a month with a perfect driver score. This approach promotes positive feedback and encourages safer driving habits across the business.

How Telematics Data Transformed Driver Behaviour

Telematics data enables Tarmac to design targeted training based on behaviours and trends. Jonathan Meddings adds: “The solution enables us to design training for specific issues. As a result, we have seen a reduction in speeding: 10% over the limit and 20% over the limit have halved. The data also empowers our managers to have the right conversations with drivers who are not following procedure, for example, seatbelt usage – now we have the data required to take relevant action.”

Fleet Governance and Accountability

Fleet safety data is now embedded within Tarmac’s governance structure. Monthly MI Fleet Safety Packs are reviewed in management meetings to assess performance, reward success, and identify further opportunities for improvement. By embedding data at every level of the organisation, fleet safety has evolved from a compliance requirement into a core operational discipline with clear accountability and measurable outcomes.

Improving Fleet Efficiency and Operational Control

In addition to safety and collision reduction, the Motormax and Geotab solution has delivered further operational efficiencies:

  • Accurate reporting of personal mileage usage, supporting HMRC compliance and future-proofing reporting.
  • Ability to generate detailed reports by region, supporting seven regional directors.
  • Reduction in fleet mileage by avoiding unnecessary journeys.
  • Improved mileage capture for lease vehicles, enabling more accurate quotations which will result in reduced lease costs.
  • Optimisation of vehicle types by analysing where 4×4 vehicles are required versus lower-cost panel vans, delivering cost savings.

Return on Investment from Fleet Technology

While significant benefits have already been realised, the solution also provides a platform for continued innovation and long-term value. As the partnership continues to evolve, Tarmac is exploring new ways to enhance its fleet safety ecosystem and sustainability performance. By leveraging data-driven insights and continuous feedback, the business remains committed to achieving the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Jonathan Meddings sums up, “Working closely with Motormax and Geotab, we are confident that we are future-proofing our fleet safety and operations. We have only utilised a small part of the Geotab platform so far, and there is significant scope to deliver even more value.”

The collaboration between Tarmac, Motormax, and Geotab demonstrates the power of integration – bringing together technology, data, and people to deliver measurable, lasting results.

The improvements achieved through the partnership have been recognised at the Brake 2026 UK Fleet Champions Awards, where Motormax and Tarmac were Highly Commended in the Fleet Safety Partnership Award category for their collaborative approach to improving fleet safety.
